Immigration DNA Test FAQ

Immigration DNA testing is a legal genetic test used to verify biological relationships (such as parent-child or siblings) when applying for immigration to Canada. It’s commonly required when documentary evidence (e.g., birth certificates) is not available or insufficient.

It is typically requested by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) when documentary evidence is insufficient.

Immigration DNA tests are accurate:

  • Parent-child testing: over 99.9% probability of relationship, if related as parent-child.

  • Exclusion results: 0% probability of relationship, if not related as parent-child.

These results are legally admissible for immigration purposes.

The process typically involves:

         1. IRCC sends a DNA testing request letter

        2. You contact an SCC-accredited laboratory in Canada

        3. Payment is made directly to the lab

        4. The lab arranges sample collection in Canada and abroad (if needed)

        5. Samples are collected under strict identity verification procedures

        6. The lab sends results directly to IRCC and the visa office.

  • Once we receive all samples for the sponsor and overseas applicants, we will notify you that the case is proceeding to analysis.

  • The report will be sent directly to the embassy/IRCC office, and you will be copied where applicable.

  • Report issued within approximately 5 business days.

On average, the full process takes a few months. The 30, 60, or 90 day notice on your letter is for you to START the process, NOT to complete it.

Common immigration DNA tests include:

  • Parent-child

  • Full siblings

  • Half-siblings

  • Grandparent-grandchild

  • Avuncular (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

The lab will advise if the relationship requested can meet IRCC standards.

If the test excludes the claimed biological relationship:

  • IRCC may refuse the immigration application

  • Applicants may be given an opportunity to respond

  • The decision is made solely by IRCC

The lab does not influence immigration decisions.

We use a buccal swab (a painless cheek swab). No blood samples are collected.

Immigration DNA Testing Requirements

To book your DNA test, please have the following information ready:
  1. A copy of your Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) letter or a Canadian High Commission (CHC) letter requesting DNA testing.
  2. Lawyer or immigration consultant information (if applicable).
  3. Each applicant’s contact details (to facilitate scheduling).

Reasons To Complete an Immigration DNA Test

Immigration DNA testing is often used to establish paternity between a child and the sponsor living in Canada. This type of test can be useful when the child’s birth certificate does not list the father, or changes were made to the birth certificate after the birth of the child or when there is no other way to establish paternity.

Immigration DNA testing can also be used to confirm a family relationship between relatives who are applying for immigration to Canada. In some cases, Immigration DNA testing may be required by the Canadian government in order to approve an application for immigration. The results of an immigration DNA test can help establish identity and support immigration or citizenship applications.

Immigration DNA testing is a simple and effective way to obtain the information needed to complete important steps for immigration to Canada.

Common Immigration DNA Test Scenarios:
  • Paternity DNA tests between a sponsor living in Canada and an international child
  • Sibling DNA tests to determine if siblings are full or half-siblings
